This strange experiment in creating piano-like instruments from individual resonant sources is one of the ideas that has been visiting regular sampler Christian Hanson for 22 years. Inspired by John Carpenter’s 1974 cult film Dark Star, Christian had always dreamed of owning a piano like the one the astronaut plays in the film, where instead of strings, mallets strike bottles and glasses. It was not until 2004, when he was commissioned to score a science fiction film, that Christian began his often frustrating attempts to recreate the essence of that scene from Carpenter’s classic.
